First Time Homeowners Choose MyHome for Manhattan Renovation

Designer Ariel Ram, Project Manager Rafael Parra, and their team were tasked with helping first-time homeowners create their dream home from a dated, bland apartment with a kitchen straight out of the 70s. As an added challenge the team had to incorporate his and hers bathrooms, a home office and deal with a myriad of surprises along the way.
The homeowner was looking for their first purchase to be their dream home. Two people that love to cook and watch a movie, they were looking for a space that met their needs. Couple that with looking to expand their family and running a therapy business from the small bedroom in the front, a new look and functionality was required.
The transformation of apartment included a full kitchen remodel, bathroom renovations and floor refinishing. Before the remodel, the home was dated with no wow-factor. A totally black bathroom, a 70s kitchen with Formica countertops, and mismatched flooring throughout left the homeowners wanting more. The biggest challenge posed by the renovation were the number of discoveries made during demolition. The team has to seamlessly update the plans and stay on schedule.
The couple spends a lot of time in the kitchen so the space was really important to the success of the renovation. The design called for high-end Café line appliances from GE. The homeowners also selected a 5-burners slide-in range and a convection microwave that doubles as an exhaust hood.
From the beginning, there was a desire to make the two bathrooms, a ‘his’ and ‘hers.’ To meet the homeowner’s desire for an extremely clean bathroom, the team eliminated tiles and grout on the walls. Instead, imported Italian Zebra marble slabs were used on the shower walls. Each wall is one large slab of exquisite polished marble.
One of the big surprises came when the tile in the master bathroom was demolished. A probe hole allowed the crew to see what was behind it, in doing so, they exposed a ‘hidden’ window. With the ability to bring in some natural light, tearing out the entire wall and reframing was a no-brainer. The new bathroom now had ample light and proper ventilation.
Grey and white are the new neutrals and the team spared no details here. Whether it was the German cabinet doors or the wood-look porcelain in the lavatory, the newly renovated apartment is a marvel of clean aesthetics.
Designer Ariel Ram commented, “Like working in any typical apartment that is over 50 years old, you never know what you are going to get until after demolition. Whether it was electrical piping in a closet or the unexpected window in the bathroom, a quick site meeting with the client, designer and project manager allowed us to make swift decisions. The team approach really helped turn any challenges into opportunities.”

Designer Ariel Ram Ariel Ram is a classically trained interior designer who has been working in New York City since 2009.
