Fishtown Social, located at 1525 Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood, has become one of the top natural wine destinations in the city. And now, Owner Vanessa Wong has issued the wine bar's list of the best 10 natural wines to drink this holiday season.
The natural wines, which are available for purchase in Fishtown Social's bottle shop, as well as by the glass or bottle at the bar and restaurant, were hand-selected by Wong, who has been following the natural wine trend for five years.
"Fishtown Social's mission is to take the mystery and intimidation out of natural wine and wine in general," said Wong. "I put this list together focusing on approachability, accessibility, and education. Those are my top priorities when curating selections both at the bar and in our shop. While the definition of 'natural wine' is somewhat unsettled, there appears to be a consensus that, at minimum, natural wines check a number of boxes."
Those boxes include organic or biodynamic farming practices; native and/or spontaneous yeast fermentation; unfined and unfiltered; no additives or preservatives; and no added sulfur or minimal sulfur (under 40pp) used only at bottling to stabilize the wine.
The natural wines featured in Ms. Wong's top-10 list include Laetare, Prosecco Extra Dry (NV, $24); Domaine Moutard, Pet' Mout' Chardonnay Petillant Naturel (NV, $23); Meinklang, Österreich Burgenland Red (2018, $27); Celler Finca Parera, Clar, Xarello Blend Penedes (2018, $27); Celler Finca Parera, Fosc, Red Blend Penedes (2017, $29); Esencia Rural, Pampaneo Natural Airén Toledo (2018, $27); Mother Rock, Kweperfontein Chenin Blanc (2017, $29); Bloomer Creek Vineyard, Finger Lakes Dry Riesling Tanzen Dame Auten (2017, $31); Swick Wines, Pinot Noir (2017, $49).
Fishtown Social features a rotating selection of reds, whites and sparkling wines, as well as cocktails, beer, and shareable small plates. The wine bar and bottle shop are open seven days a week for dinner, and Saturday and Sunday for brunch as well. Learn more by visiting http://fishtownsocial.com.
