“In a city that just elected its first mayor who is a woman of color, now more than ever, I’m thrilled to open my own business in Chicago. When I found Fitness Machine Technicians, I knew it was the right fit – combining my passions for fitness and service.”

Fitness Machine Technicians, specialists in the maintenance and repair of exercise equipment for commercial and residential customers, announced it will open its first location in Illinois today. Berenice Carlson of Chicago will own and manage the local office.

Headquartered in Philadelphia, Fitness Machine Technicians operates in more than 70 markets across the country and offers service/repair and maintenance on a variety of exercise equipment in fitness centers, universities, high schools, hotels, apartment complexes, corporate gyms and private residences.

“As a fitness enthusiast and traveler, it’s frustrating when you finally motivate yourself to head to the hotel gym, only to find equipment that does not work,” says Carlson. “My goal is to provide our area with the best maintenance and repair service in the area, and to give people peace of mind that their machines are working in top shape.”

Carlson’s family emigrated from Mexico City to Quad Cities, Illinois when she was eight. As the daughter of immigrants, she praises her parents for making the sacrifice to move their family to the U.S., increasing access to education and opportunity. Carlson now looks forward to leading her women-owned business.

A member of the Chicago Foundation for Women, Carlson states, “In a city that just elected its first mayor who is a woman of color, now more than ever, I’m thrilled to open my own business in Chicago. When I found Fitness Machine Technicians, I knew it was the right fit – combining my passions for fitness and service.”

With a Master’s in Public Health from Northern Illinois University, Carlson spent her career at AMITA Health where she started as a phlebotomist and eventually became Associate Vice President of Customer Engagement and Population Health. But for the past four years, she has also served as an operations coordinator for medical mission trips to Central America. She works with the local government and ministers of health to meet the medical needs of each community. For her, it’s an opportunity to meet the needs of those whose stories she resonates with – “I see myself in their eyes,” she says.

Since its inception, Fitness Machine Technicians has been committed to delivering reliable service/repair and preventive maintenance services to customers across the nation. With more than 35 years’ experience in the fitness industry, Chief Executive and Founder Don Powers created a company that puts its customers first.

Powers notes, “We’re thrilled to have Berenice open our first Illinois office. She brings a wealth of knowledge to her role, and a deep passion for serving her community and improving their ability to lead a healthy lifestyle.”

Carlson has hired a local technician and plans to hire several more as the business grows. All technicians are trained at Fitness Machine Technicians’ headquarters in Philadelphia.
