As the level of obesity in the United States and Canada is rising due to fast food restaurants and portions that are entirely too large, both the need and popularity of the overall idea of getting slim and fit once again rise as well.

The average weight at which many people in many different parts of the world are seen as being normal is alarming. Perhaps even more alarming is that this change in the overall average weight that an individual is seen as being “normal” rather than overweight compared to most people is not only statically speaking, but has become normal in the physical world as well. When the rate of obesity has raised an entire nation’s average weight, such as the United States whose obesity level constantly rose from 1987 to 2007, an individual that is the same weight as the average weight of someone from the same area 30 years ago is now seen as sexy, not to mention the common view of an individual who is actively visiting some type of fitness franchise to stay slim or lose weight. As the years go on, both the need and application of physical fitness have risen steadily, making this the perfect time for any type of fitness or personal training franchise to capitalize, and as the largest rate of obesity currently belongs to the United States and Canada, the statistics used in this article will come from there.

Background for Fitness and Personal Training Franchises

It was not commonplace to have a fitness franchise around town in Canada or the U.S. until the 1970s and 80s. The numbers of fitness centers to perform at rapidly rose due to running and aerobics, leading to an even bigger increase in numbers of fitness centers strewn around the country in the 1990s. At the beginning of the 2000s, there were 16,938 different fitness based clubs, and by January 2008 that number jumped to an incredible 29,636. Over sixteen million of the members of these clubs went to health clubs over 100 days per year. The fitness club industry itself produced 9.76 billion dollars in 2008 alone.

The future of fitness and personal training franchises around the world is certain to continue rising as the obesity rate rises, and the number of people joining the industry increases. In order to create a create a massive jump, the fitness industry is going to have be able to cater towards the demographic who was near age 34 or older in 2000, as these people are now nearing or have already passed 50. Many in this demographic are now looking for other options besides the gym, which can include services.
