Airbnb, Calendly, TripAdvisor among employers providing paid vacation perks and remote jobs

BOULDER, Colo., May 15, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In a recent Pew Research Center survey, 62 percent of workers said having a job that offers paid time off is "extremely important" to them. However, the same survey found nearly half of workers who have paid time off reported taking less time away than their employer offered. Recognizing the positive impact vacation time can have on employees' health and wellness, overall productivity, and retention rates, many companies are turning to financial incentives that encourage staff to step away. To help job seekers identify some of these employers, FlexJobs has shared 12 companies that help pay for employee vacations and hire remote workers.

Job seekers commonly feel pressured to put vacation plans on hold when applying or interviewing for a new position, but FlexJobs' career experts advise this isn't always necessary. If a company is truly committed to providing paid time off benefits, candidates should feel empowered to share their plans during an interview using the following steps.

How to Discuss Vacation Plans During an Interview

1. Create Open Communication
In the middle of a job hunt, it's easy to only focus on the application process. However, the interview is the first building block of a relationship with the company. Start on the right foot by creating open and transparent communication on key topics, including any upcoming vacation plans.

2. Mind the Timing
Managers use first interviews to get to know and evaluate candidates. As a result, experts generally agree that bringing up vacation plans at this stage is unnecessary and might even be viewed as presumptuous. On the other hand, second interviews convey greater interest, so come ready to broach the subject of vacation then.

More specifically, a great opportunity to bring it up is when the hiring manager asks about start date availability. For example, after a candidate confirms they'd need to give their current employer two weeks' notice, they can then mention any scheduled vacation time. But keep in mind that the absolute latest point to mention a vacation is when a job offer is extended.

3. Prepare & Practice the Message
New employers want to know the time frame of potential absences, so it's best to keep statements short and sweet. Remember: this is a professional courtesy of advance notice––not an ask for permission––so practice saying plans with confidence and tell the truth. There's no need to create an elaborate story when the actual travel plans are for R&R with a spouse. Plus, lying to "sound better" can foster stress, especially when a new coworker innocently asks to see pictures.

4. Clarify Time-Off Policies
Be ready to discuss with the employer how the situation will be handled during the final offer. It might be a situation that requires problem-solving together to find the best solution. While some companies do offer paid time off from day one, more likely scenarios that might be presented include:

  • Moving a start date so as not to interrupt the onboarding process
  • Inquiring about borrowing the vacation days from what will be provided in the future
  • Asking for unpaid time off
