The year 2020 shines light on the power of remote and flexible work to improve the workplace on a global scale

"The value of remote and flexible work has never been more apparent than right now, as the ‘world’s largest work-from-home experiment’ has proven effective at keeping millions of companies afloat and people employed during the coronavirus pandemic," said Sara Sutton, Founder and CEO of FlexJobs.

FlexJobs has announced it will celebrate National Flex Day on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 with a number of activities to continue the critical conversation around the need for remote and flexible work options in the workplace. National Flex Day, started in 2013 and held during National Work & Family Month, was initially designed to inspire professionals and employers alike to unite behind the need for work flexibility, bring awareness to the benefits, and move the issue forward on a national scale. This year, it serves as an opportunity to highlight how much remote work has transformed the workplace on a global scale since March 2020 and the potential for its positive impact on both workers and businesses in the years to come.

“The value of remote and flexible work has never been stronger or more apparent than right now, as the ‘world’s largest work-from-home experiment’ has proven effective at keeping millions of companies afloat and people employed during the global coronavirus pandemic,” said Sara Sutton, Founder and CEO of FlexJobs. “I’ve been asked many times where remote work will go after COVID-19. I firmly believe we are finally at a tipping point where remote and flexible work will become a long-term and important component of any healthy organization, both in emergency preparedness and in regular operations. While it’s highly unfortunate for the reasons remote and flexible work has grown so dramatically, the workplace and its workers are absolutely ready for it,” Sutton said.

Activities to celebrate National Flex Day, which can be promoted using the hashtag #NationalFlexDay and tagging @flexjobs, will include:

FlexJobs’ 9th annual survey of over 8,000 professionals uncovered key findings about the impact and importance of work flexibility among the general public:

  • Since 2013, work-life balance, family, time savings, and commute stress have been the top four reported reasons people seek flexible work.
  • Behind salary (76%), work-life balance (73%) and flexible work options (72%) are the primary factors people consider when evaluating job prospects -- well ahead of other factors such as health insurance (39%), vacation time (34%) and 401k/retirement benefits (28%).
  • 79% say they would be more loyal to their employer if they had flexible work options
  • Nearly 1 in 3 (29%) would consider a 10 or 20% cut in pay for the option to work from home
  • 60% have left or considered leaving a job because it did not offer flexibility
  • 96% think they would be more productive or as productive working in a home office versus the traditional office
  • Many different groups of people benefit from and value work flexibility, such as working parents, entrepreneurs, introverts, travelers/digital nomads, military spouses, caregivers, those living in rural areas, people with chronic health conditions, pet lovers, semi-retirees, and environmentalists

Everyone is also encouraged to join the work flexibility movement by adding their name to 1MFWF!
