Career service shares guide to top companies, industries, job titles, and insights for digital nomads

"As companies adopt more flexible arrangements, including location independence and remote work options, we anticipate people will have more opportunities than ever before to work remotely–and from anywhere in the world," said Sara Sutton, Founder and CEO at FlexJobs.

Today’s workers are leaning into new ways—and locations—to get the job done. In fact, 54% of people recently identified as “anywhere workers,” a new kind of digital nomad that has a full-time, remote career with zero location requirements. But given that only 5% of remote positions are true “work-from-anywhere” jobs, these sought-after roles can be surprisingly hard to find. To help job seekers connect to remote careers that can be performed from anywhere in the world, FlexJobs has named the Top 30 Companies That Hire for Work-From-Anywhere Jobs in 2022, as well as top industries and job titles for these coveted positions.

“Prior to the pandemic, digital nomads were often seen as a fringe way of working and limited mostly to freelance jobs,” said Sara Sutton, Founder and CEO at FlexJobs. “But as companies adopt more flexible arrangements, including location independence and remote work options, we anticipate people will have more opportunities than ever before to work remotely––and from anywhere in the world. We hope this list of companies and resources helps job seekers and aspiring ‘anywhere workers’ find careers that support both their personal ventures and professional goals,” Sutton concluded.

To compile the list, FlexJobs analyzed its database and determined which companies had the highest volume of work-from-anywhere job postings between January 1, 2022, and June 30, 2022, and met the following criteria:

  • A “work-from-anywhere” remote job without a location restriction
  • A fully remote job that doesn’t require any time in the office
  • Offers a full-time or part-time schedule

According to recent findings from Travel Off Path, over 45 countries––including many popular travel destinations––are welcoming digital nomads with long-stay visas, such as Brazil, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Croatia, Italy, Malta, and Portugal, among others.

However exciting being a digital nomad may sound, combining career and travel can be challenging. FlexJobs’ career coaching team has shared five must-ask questions below to help job seekers assess whether the work-from-anywhere lifestyle is right for them.

1. What are the pros and cons of working from anywhere?
Prior to embracing a work-from-anywhere career, job seekers should compare all of the pros and cons of being a digital nomad and be certain they’re fully invested in the idea of living light—that is, without a lot of the things they may enjoy on a daily basis when working in a more standard home-based or traditional job.

2. Which remote work skills are required?
Job seekers should ensure they’re equipped with the necessary skills in order to work from any location successfully, such as being able to manage workloads, meet deadlines, and work well with colleagues, even if they’re thousands of miles away. Superior communication and tech-savviness are also top skills to have, since they’ll serve as a lifeline to work and colleagues.

3. How well does an employer support digital nomad workers?
A nomadic lifestyle involves a two-way commitment between worker and employer. Employers have to be as fully committed as workers are to the idea of working from anywhere. When conducting a job search for flexible work that can be done from any destination, keep an eye out for companies that have demonstrated their commitment to supporting true work-from-anywhere jobs, such as providing workers with digital nomad essentials and tools.

4. What is the budget for travel expenses?
Assessing expenses and putting together a budget will be essential before becoming a digital nomad. Consider whether rent or a mortgage will need to be paid while traveling. How much will be budgeted for hotels, hostels, and the like? What about food, transportation, and internet?

5. Are there any top travel destinations?
Figure out the top travel priorities, such as seeing a certain number of countries, getting a change of scenery, or learning a new language, by researching the best locations. If it feels a bit intimidating to travel and work at the same time, job seekers can also do a test run and join a coworking space, or try an organized coworkation—a coworking retreat for digital nomads—for a few weeks.

Because being an “anywhere worker” is growing in popularity, there may be a lot of competition for the roles. Make sure your resume demonstrates why you’re perfect for the job:

  • If you’ve worked remotely before, include it as the location of your job (Name of Company | Remote)
  • Create a “Remote Work Experience” section on your resume
  • Include a "Technology" section, highlighting your experience with remote tools (Zoom, Google Suite, Trello, etc.)
  • Mention it in your job responsibilities
