Flightradar24 Adds Flight Tracking for Non-ADS-B Equipped Aircraft
Stockholm, Sweden (PRWEB) August 31, 2013 -- Flightradar24, the world’s most popular flight tracking service, recently added the capability to accurately locate aircraft through the use of multilateration (MLAT). This allows Flightradar24 to display positions of non-ADS-B equipped aircraft.
Flightradar24 shows live air traffic from around the world. The primary technology, the company uses to receive positional aircraft data is called automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B). In order to pick up ADS-B signals from aircraft around the world, Flightradar24 has a network of 2,000+ ADS-B receivers that feed data to the company’s servers.
A large number of aircraft are not yet equipped with an ADS-B transponder and instead send out a signal that does not contain positional information. When Flightradar24 has four or more ADS-B receivers covering the same area, it’s able calculate the position of non-ADS-B equipped aircraft in that area by measuring the time difference of arrival (TDOA) of an aircraft’s signal.
Currently Flightradar24 has MLAT coverage in large parts of Europe, but the coverage is expanding rapidly and will soon include many other parts of the world.
In addition to ADS-B and MLAT data, Flightradar24 get data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States. This data is based on radar data and includes all commercial air traffic in US and Canadian air space.
