Former NFL Star and Realtor Ruvell Martin Instructs Ardrey Kell Students on Leadership
Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) December 15, 2016 -- Former NFL player and Realtor Ruvell Martin, of Costello Real Estate and Investments, recently spoke to students at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, NC, on leadership in the community and amongst their peers. Students in attendance were picked by the school’s coaching staff based on their athletic abilities and natural leadership qualities.
Ardrey Kell High School Athletic Director Brian Knap hired Jeremy Boone, owner of Athlete by Design, to come to the school to implement his “Learning to Lead Program” for student-athletes. “Having trained Ruvell for four years, I was excited to invite him to be a guest speaker and share his leadership experience as a real-life example of someone who strives to be a leader in every aspect of his life,” said Boone.
Martin spoke to the hand-picked assembly at Ardrey Kell -- a student-centered community that implements a challenging curriculum leading to the development of creative and independent thinkers who have a strong sense of honor, respect, and service -- about his experiences in the sports industry and leadership pros and cons. “Due to the fact that some of my older teammates took me under their wing, and I listened to them, I learned how to lead by example,” said Martin, who played with the Green Bay Packers, among other NFL teams. “I reminded the student-athletes at Ardrey Kell that there is always someone watching, which is why they need to ensure they are leading by example and building up their teammates.”
Martin used as an example his 11-year-old daughter and how he is already educating her on leadership, as she has become something of a mentor to the 5-year-old daughter of a family friend. “I’m teaching my daughter to always do the right thing as she, as well as everyone, has the ability to lead in a positive way, and with influence comes great responsibility,” noted Martin.
Furthermore, Martin discussed the areas of leadership in which he failed. For example, Martin, when he was with the Packers, once failed to realize the level of influence he had on his teammates. He was asked to sit out a game against Kansas City and decided not to join the team during pregame warm-ups instead of taking the opportunity to act as a mentor to his peers. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Super Bowl MVP in 2010, had a talk with Martin about how he could be a leader regardless if played in the game or not.
“Aaron expressed his disappointment as he thought better of me, and hoped the conversation would help me be the leader he knew I could be,” concluded Martin. “I was grateful and surprised that I had such an effect on my QB and the rest of the team.”
