Fox News Highlights Childhelp Founders as Midnight Hero
PHOENIX (PRWEB) September 18, 2019 -- Shannon Bream of Fox News @ Night honored Childhelp founders Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson on her “Midnight Hero” segment, celebrating their lifelong commitment to serving abused and neglected children around the world.
“Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson have been fighting for the lives of children for 60 years,” Bream said on her show. “These incredible, dedicated, hardworking women… they are tonight’s Midnight Heroes.”
Childhelp, the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit advocating for abused and neglected children, has served more than 10 and a half million children since 1959, when O’Meara and Fedderson first began their work.
“We truly appreciate Shannon’s passion and heart for recognizing heroes across our country, and we are honored to be included,” O’Meara, who also serves as the organization’s CEO and chairman, said. “Many people don’t realize that approximately five children die every day in the United States as the result of abuse and neglect. That’s five too many. When people like Shannon – and her team – shine the spotlight on child abuse, it helps us save innocent lives.”
Childhelp began when O’Meara and Fedderson, both young actresses at the time, found 11 abandoned orphans in Tokyo while on a goodwill tour during the Korean War. Ditching their careers in Hollywood, the pair turned their attention toward raising money to build orphanages, a school and a hospital overseas before working to end the child abuse epidemic in America.
Over the past six decades, Childhelp has transformed into an internationally respected nonprofit dedicated to the prevention, intervention and treatment of child abuse. O’Meara and Fedderson have received numerous awards for their work, including nine nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.
“60 years ago, we could not have imagined what all was to come when we brought 11 orphans to safety,” Fedderson, who also serves as Childhelp’s president, said. “Some may call us heroes, but we feel this was our life’s purpose all along. We did what we felt was right in our hearts, and we continue to live out that mission today.”
