FR Conversions Gets First Triple-K Certification on ProMaster Type II Ambulance in U.S.

The Pioneer II is built by a team of experts in the field, including medical corpsmen and emergency medical technicians (EMT), a definitive advantage over many other manufacturers. "I have spent 40 years as an EMT in both the commercial and 911 EMS industry. Many of those years, administering patient care inside a Type II ambulance. The Pioneer II is by far the nicest, most versatile and cost-conscious Type II in the ambulance market,” says Larry Appel, V.P. of New Product Marketing at FR Conversions.
The Ram ProMaster is the only full-size van with front wheel drive, providing strength and reliability to the Pioneer II. “I am proud of the dedication and engineering that went into the creation of the Pioneer II,” Appel says. The ambulance offers a multitude of features that are necessary for effective use as a type 2 ambulance, most of which are standard:
• Comprehensive lighting package, including a 35,000-lumen light system, interior LED lights, and LED lighting inside 11 of the interior cabinets
• Oxygen system with slide-out cylinder change tray
• Quiet, yet powerful, interior climate control featuring a gas-powered heating system based in the floor of the vehicle that operates independently of the vehicle’s main power source
• Aluminum cabinetry
• Digital maintenance and repair diagnostics obtained through an on-board computer
• Interior USB’s and plug-ins
• Back-up deep cycle battery
• 2,000-watt inverter
• Low step-in height for easy patient loading and unloading
To earn its Triple-K certification, the Pioneer II underwent rigorous crash testing. These tests were conducted by a third party that is ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) accredited. This certification assures EMT’s and emergency professionals that the emergency vehicle meets established industry standards and protocols.
Certification testing is accomplished using a dynamic sled, which simulates multiple types and severities of impacts.
The areas of the Pioneer II that underwent testing include the following:
• 12 impact sites on various parts and sides of the ambulance
• Seat belts and stretchers with dummies strapped in
• Cabinets with weights inside
• Electrical systems
• Patient compartment CO, sound, and lighting levels
• Interior climate control
• Oxygen tank system
• Engine cooling system
• Emergency lighting configuration
Extensive road testing was performed to gather real world data that could best evaluate the Pioneer II. After rigorous testing in many different categories, the Pioneer II’s triple K certification speaks for itself. Not only is it certified to be safe in the unlikely event of an accident, it also garnered excellent reviews at EMS World in Las Vegas where professionals had a chance to see it up close.
