Hoge Fenton to host panel discussion on BLM movement and policing issues on August 19

As part of its commitment to community service, Hoge Fenton, a leading Northern California law firm, today announced it is hosting "Black Lives Matter: No More Happy Talk," a webinar with a group of distinguished speakers. Taking place Wednesday, August 19 from 12-1 p.m. PDT, the webinar will focus on the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and the issue of policing.

The event will be moderated by Hoge Fenton Managing Shareholder and Attorney Dan Ballesteros and will feature Hon. LaDoris Cordell, a retired judge of the Superior Court of California and former Independent Police Auditor for the city of San Jose; Dr. Robert Luckett, a tenured Associate Professor of History and Director of the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University; and Chris Bridges, a member of the Equal Justice Society (EJS) legal team and Program Manager for EJS’s Implicit Bias Network.

With the recent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Elijah McClain, there has been a renewed focus on social justice and the countless number of Black lives lost as a result of racial discrimination. While it is not a new phenomenon, it is time for Americans to face the long history of racial injustice and senseless institutionalized violence in the U.S through active listening, learning, and action. BLM is a call to action in response to this violence and anti-Black racism - a movement that seeks justice and transformation.

The following topics will be discussed:

  • The history of the BLM movement and how we got here.
  • The culture of police violence and policing.
  • Systemic racism and unconscious bias.
  • How to become a better ally to BLM.
