Numael, born in Colombia, made his way to America to study at the Art Students League in New York City. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, and his portraiture is represented by The Guild of Boston Artists in Boston, MA. Among Numael's many portraits are such well-known personalities as American poet and D.C. Poet Laureate Dolores Kendrick, former New Hampshire Governor Walter Peterson, and Lucy Stone (1818-1893), a leading advocate of women's rights and co-founder of the American Women's Suffrage Association. Numael's portraits can be found in numerous private collections in the U.S. and Europe, as well as in prestigious institutions, including The American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, MA; Exeter Academy, NH; Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston MA; Franklin Pierce College, NH; and Merrimack College, Andover MA.
Shirley attended Syracuse University, The University of Rochester, The Brooklyn Museum Art School and the Cooper Union in New York. She received a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Sorbonne and Le Grand Chaumier. In 1970, she moved to Hancock, NH with her husband Numael to specialize in portraiture, still life, and landscape murals, establishing a career as an oil painter and pastel artist.
Now in their eighties, Shirley and Numael Pulido have been quietly painting and teaching private students since leaving New York over 50 years ago. The show at Fry Fine Art gallery is the most extensive public exhibit mounted in their lifetime as working artists.
