Fun Alternatives to Halloween Costumes for the Family Pet
WILTON, Conn. (PRWEB) October 17, 2018 -- Many families enjoy including their pets in Halloween festivities and want to dress up their dog or cat to coordinate with the kids’ costumes or their own. But it can be a challenge for the many pets that dislike wearing costumes.
Creative grooming is a great alternative, says Traci Simo of pet care services provider Canine Company. “Pet-safe paints and small accessories can give a pet Halloween flair without creating the discomfort of a costume. Most professional groomers offer these, but if you’re crafty, you can try them at home.”
- Temporary “tattoos.” Paint in bright colors can be stenciled onto the coat to create fun designs. A big blue “S” on his back can transform a dog into a superhero; bright orange peace signs on her hip can turn a cat into a flower child. “Be sure to use only pet-safe paint that is non-toxic and washes out easily,” says Simo.
- Punk hairstyles. Spiking his hair with non-toxic styling gel can give any dog a rock-star look. It can be left natural or painted in a rainbow of colors. A Mohawk can be extended down the dog’s backbone to create a pre-historic creature look. These styles work best on dogs with longer hair.
- Hair accessories. Colorful feathers or a fake flower tied into the hair over a pet’s ear is another fun Halloween option. Princess or flower child, most dogs don’t even know they are wearing this light accessory; just be careful not to pull the hair tightly, notes Simo.
- Nail art. For a final touch, add nail color. Pet-safe polish is available in a range of colors and patterns to coordinate with the pet’s tattoo or spiked hair. Be sure to choose a polish that’s designed for pets and will not be harmful if ingested.
“If you opt for a costume, be sure it doesn’t restrict his movement or vision and that there are no small pieces he can swallow,” adds Simo. She recommends introducing the costume a few days in advance and offering a treat and praise to help him adjust.
Most importantly, she says, “if you take your dog trick-or-treating, keep a firm hold on the leash so your pet can’t take off in pursuit of ghosts and goblins roaming the neighbor. Safety first!”
