Gainspeed Leads Demonstration of Industry’s First Distributed CCAP Architecture
Sunnyvale, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2015 -- Gainspeed, the company redefining how cable networks are built, in collaboration with its Ecosystem Partners including Juniper Networks and JDSU, is the first vendor to demonstrate a comprehensive solution that conforms with CableLabs’ Distributed CCAP Architecture (DCA) description.
CableLabs, the industry’s research and development consortium, is currently documenting several different DCAs as it announced in a recently published article. CableLabs noted that DCAs “provide significant scale advantages and flexible deployment options with support for both DOCSIS 3.0 and DOCSIS 3.1.”
Gainspeed’s Virtual CCAP solution addresses a large number of critical issues facing cable operators including the need to increase network capacity, reduce headend and hub space requirements, and migrate to an all-IP network.
Gainspeed’s Virtual CCAP completely eliminates the physical CCAP by leveraging software defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) to distribute the CCAP’s functions to other devices and locations in the network. It centralizes routing, control and management in the data center or cloud and pushes the physical layer, DOCSIS processing and RF modulation into the node, deep within the access network
By eliminating the CCAP from the headend and replacing analog optics from the headend to the node with 10 Gbps Ethernet, Virtual CCAP provides cable operators with dramatically lower capital and operating expenses, reduced headend footprint and power requirements, and increased hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) efficiency, reliability and flexibility.
By virtualizing the physical CMTS/CCAP platform and delivering full spectrum DOCSIS support, Virtual CCAP provides the foundation for an agnostic access network, enabling the scalable and cost-effective deployment of gigabit services based on DOCSIS 3.0, DOCSIS 3.1 or Fiber to the Home (FTTH) access technologies such as Passive Optical Networks (PON) and switched Ethernet.
