This collection of serious and light-hearted essays primarily deals with birding and growing native plants. Plummer relates how the garden and the gardener have evolved over 50 years. The title of this collection of writings was inspired by a story that appeared in the Fiddlehead Forum, the publication of the American Fern Society. A husband and wife were both avid gardeners and vied in outdoing each other. One fall day, the wife filled a vase with a beautiful bouquet of windflowers. The husband, not to be outdone, removed the windflowers from the vase and replaced them with ferns that he had just picked, exclaiming, “With fronds like these, who needs anemones?”
“I would hope that my love of nature and our native plants would shine through and that they would smile (or groan) at my punning and plays on words. I would hope that they would grow our native plants in their own garden and enjoy them not only in flower, but throughout the year,” the author tells.

Dr. William Allan Plummer, a retired research chemist, grew up in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He served 18 months in the U.S. Army and later earned a chemistry degree from Wilkes University and a doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. A member of several plant societies, Plummer is married and has two sons, three stepdaughters and a stepson.
