Children are the recipients of gender messaging from birth, and gender bias is firmly established by age 6. Throughout their childhood, children face limits based on gender messaging - even in the 21st century. And those messages are powerful ones.
Elementary educators are in a unique position to shift messaging so that it supports healthy development. But first, teachers and administrators need to immerse themselves in gender learning.
Enlightened Schools has developed a 3-unit professional development course for elementary educators that provides essential learning to promote positive change. The Gender Equity in Elementary Schools course helps educators dive into gender research and provides valuable tools and strategies to rethink lessons, conversations, and classroom design. Participants will be excited by new methods they can weave into their practice, from evaluating lessons to creating sustainable gender equity action plans.
The first unit of this course is free to all those who register. In this unit, participants will:
- Learn about gendered brain theories
- Consider educational theories through a new lens
- Reflect on the gender-based challenges faced by young children of all genders, as well as additional challenges of intersectionality
- Participate in individual or group assignments to prepare for creating sustainable actions plans that are developed during units 2 and 3
Gender Equity in Elementary Schools was developed by Dorothy Venditto, author of Gender Equity in Elementary Schools and Director of Enlightned Schools
Enlightened Schools is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to gender equity in elementary schools.
