Get Ready for Powerful Second Push to 2021 Hurricane Season
September 10 is the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. With almost two months to go, and many severe storms predicted, experts at Scepter encourage East Coast residents to safely stock up on fuel and water.
MIAMI, Okla., Sept. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The bull's eye is on us. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), September is the most common month for hurricanes to make landfall. And this year, October is looking powerful, too.
Now that Ida has passed, are you ready for Hurricanes Nicholas, Odette and Peter? If you live in a location in the eastern half of the country, you need to be prepared. That means having plenty of food, batteries, medications, fuel and water available.
"Fortunately, hurricanes are not surprise weather events," says Daniel Marshall, vice president of marketing and business development with Scepter®. "There's usually plenty of notice that a hurricane is headed your way. However, that doesn't mean you should wait until the last minute to prepare."

If you're potentially in a hurricane zone, Marshall recommends having both water and fuel containers filled at your home.
"Don't scramble and wait until the last minute to purchase essential items and containers," says Marshall. "We've all seen panic buying when a forecast is bad. It results in massive runs and depletion of items you may need. Since September and October are such predictably active months for hurricanes, now is the time to stock up."

How Much Should I Have?
If a hurricane hits your area, you could be out of power for days or weeks. During the first critical days after a hurricane, families should be ready to survive with their own food, water and essentials. Plan to have enough supplies for all family members and pets.
According to the National Hurricane Survival Initiative (NHSI), you should store one gallon of clean water per person per day. And, you should have at least a three-day supply of water per person. This equates to two quarts for drinking and two quarts for each person for food preparation and sanitation needs. The NHSI provides a detailed checklist outlining the food, safety, sanitation and tools you may need when a hurricane strike is forecasted.
Marshall recommends having at least a full 5-gallon container of fuel available at all times if you live in a hurricane-prone area.
"While water is essential for living, fuel can help you can get on with your life," says Marshall. "You may need fuel to operate a generator or perhaps a chainsaw to remove fallen trees. It's even possible you'll need extra fuel for your vehicle if local gas stations are closed as a result of the storm.
