Global edtech company Learnosity analyzed operating system usage in US K-12 learning products since 2012 - here's what they discovered
Chrome OS has over twice the number of users as its closest rival, Windows -- Third-most popular operating system is iOS, which outnumbers Android-powered mobile devices 10 to 1 -- At just 0.24% usage, Internet Explorer has effectively become redundant in the lives of learners.
DUBLIN, March 10, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The data, which describes usage patterns across US K–12 learning products since 2012, comes from assessment solutions provider Learnosity, whose technology boasts 14.8 million monthly active users.
Informed by data derived from their millions of users, the company has created a short video to illustrate the race between tech giants for classroom dominance in the US over the last 8 years. The resulting bar chart shows one company clearly outmanoeuvring its rivals.
"Before we looked at the data, we already knew about the meteoric rise of Chromebooks since their introduction in 2011 – but their sheer dominance in the schools market is astounding to see," said Gavin Cooney, Learnosity CEO. "As of a year ago, Google said that 30 million Chromebooks were used in education, and our data suggests that Google continues to absolutely crush it. Equally remarkable is how quickly Windows has died as the dominant operating system in education."
The factors behind Chromebook's success include:
-Lower-cost devices.
-An ecosystem of free tech (with apps like Google Classroom, Slides and Keep).
-No local storage as it's cloud-based.
If you're building an assessment product, it's invaluable to know the most (and least) commonly used operating systems when functionality testing for the majority of users.
"Just make sure you build for Chromebooks (including offline) when building an education product," said Cooney. "Incidentally, we're seeing usage of Internet Explorer plummet to 0.24%, so you're probably safe to save the expense and finally scratch it off the list of browsers you test on."
