Grant To Advance Treatment Of Autism Awarded To Children’s Specialized Hospital
Mountainside, NJ (PRWEB) June 25, 2015 -- The Pediatric Primary Care at Children’s Specialized Hospital has been recognized for innovative care in treating children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with a grant to help further their efforts.
The grant, $200,000 a year for two years, was awarded by the New Jersey Governor’s Council for Medical Research and Treatment of Autism. It will allow the Pediatric Primary Care practice at Children’s Specialized Hospital to provide a medical home to children with ASD, creating a clinical model and usable tools for caring for these unique children and their families.

McDonald MD, chief of special needs pediatrics, Children’s Specialized Hospital. “This unified coordination of care is a game changer; not only for the healthcare industry, but more importantly for the children and families we treat. Through Pediatric Primary Care ASD Medical Home, we are laying the foundation to improve life for these children and families, now and in the future.”
ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder of increasing reported prevalence that presents unique diagnostic and medical management challenges. It is frequently associated with other complex medical conditions that impact function, overall health and behavior.
Children with ASD require specialized, highly coordinated care. Each year, the Pediatric Primary Care at Children’s Specialized Hospital provides family-centered care to about 1,600 children with complex physical and mental health needs, including autism as well as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, prematurity, technology dependence, seizure disorders, developmental delay and rare medical conditions. Patients are cared for by an outstanding team of pediatricians, nurses, behavioral health professionals, staff members and care coordinators who strive to care for each unique child and family in the best way possible.
This team, uniquely equipped to care for children with autism and their other special needs, will greatly improve the health outcomes of the children treated through Children’s Specialized Hospital network of 13 locations across New Jersey.
