NEW YORK, Dec. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- This winter Impracticum, Graver Goods' independent creative writing program, will offer "Eight Prison-Breaks: Beyond Traditional Narrative," a course taught by renowned teacher and writer, David Shields. Shields is the author of twenty-two books, including Reality Hunger, The Thing About Life Is That One Day You'll Be Dead, Black Planet, and Other People: Takes & Mistakes. He has published fiction and nonfiction in the New York Times Magazine, Harper's, Esquire, Yale Review, Salon, Slate, Tin House, A Public Space, McSweeney's, Believer, Huffington Post, Los Angeles Review of Books, and Best American Essays.
During the eight-week course, which begins January 16, 2021, and runs through March 6, 2021, students will investigate the topics of brevity, journal, collage, remix, appropriation, photo, film, and collaboration through a combination of lectures, handouts, and class discussions, exploring the myriad ways in which you might deploy similar strategies in your own work.
"Many writers aim to capture the human condition in all its variety, audacity, and contradiction, but few can claim to get as close to their target as Shields. . . . [a] truly original vision brought to fruition." - Josh Rosenblatt, The Austin Chronicle
A portion of proceeds generated from Shields' class will be donated to the Brennan Center for Justice (brennancenter.org). For the time being, Graver Goods will be donating a percentage of proceeds from every Impracticum class to the helping organization of that particular instructor's choosing, meaning that simply by teaching Impracticum courses, our instructors are supporting the causes they care about.
In the future, when Covid-19 is less of a threat and barrier to in-person service, our students will engage more directly with these organizations. The volunteer service component is foundational to the Impracticum model and we believe that it helps students become more resilient and conscientious writers.
"This is a critical component of Impracticum, built upon our belief that students should keep themselves situated in the world as much as possible while thinking about craftsmanship—and regard the practice as a form of serving something larger than themselves." - Brie Bouslaugh, Program Co-Director
