NEW YORK, April 5, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- India L. Sneed, an associate in global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP's New York office, has been named to City & State's 2021 Above & Beyond list.
City & State's annual Above & Beyond awards recognize a truly outstanding group of women, including civil rights leaders, candidates for elected office, and groundbreaking innovators, according to the publication.
Sneed, a member of the firm's Government Law & Policy Practice, took on a Compassionate Release of Prisoners pro bono matter representing 53-year old James G. Boswell through the Compassionate Release Clearinghouse. The project helps prisoners with comorbidities that make them more susceptible to COVID-19, making them eligible for compassionate release. In prison, Boswell developed several health issues that supported a Compassionate Release Motion.
Although the Board of Prisons and the U.S. prosecutor opposed his release – in writing – the court returned an order in favor of the motion filed by Sneed. His release to home confinement was granted. He was ultimately released on Jan. 7, 2021. Sneed notes, "It is one of the biggest accomplishments of my legal career."
Having worked in New York City government in various capacities, Sneed has an intimate understanding of how to navigate the complexities of local government. She focuses her practice on administrative law and government affairs, as well as economic development and financing initiatives before government agencies.
Prior to joining Greenberg Traurig, Sneed was deputy executive director for a mayoral initiative created to lower crime in The New York City Housing Authority. Sneed also served as chief of staff to the 41st district councilmember, where she oversaw the legislative, budget, and community engagement priorities led by the councilmember. Prior to that, she was assistant district attorney for Kings County, where she prosecuted criminal offenses and was appointed to the Investigations Division – Civil Rights Bureau, as well as to the Brooklyn Young Adult Court. Sneed was also executive director of New York State BLAC Caucus and a legislative and budget director for the 28th district councilmember while in law school.
