Greenberg Traurig Shareholder Jillian C. Kirn Named to Committee of Seventy Board of Directors
The newly composed board of directors for the region's leading nonprofit focused on good government now includes Shareholder Jillian C. Kirn of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP.
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The newly composed board of directors for the region's leading nonprofit focused on good government now includes Shareholder Jillian C. Kirn of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP.
The Committee of Seventy (C70) recently appointed Kirn, who practices environmental law, with its incoming class. Since 1904, the organization has focused on increasing strong, ethical governance, public policy, civic education and engagement in Philadelphia.
"The Committee of Seventy chose wisely in selecting Jillian to serve on their board," said Curtis B. Toll, managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig's Philadelphia office. "Jillian is smart, thoughtful, and passionate about elevating civil discourse. This turbulent year, in particular, has highlighted the need for strong civic education and engagement, as well as leadership that helps citizens make informed choices about how best to work together to create a more equitable society."
In the midst of celebrating the centennial of the 19th Amendment, this selection takes on heightened meaning for Kirn, co-lead of the Women's Initiative for the Philadelphia office. The firmwide program supports the inclusion, development, and advancement of women lawyers.
"To me, voting is not only a right but a duty, and C70 works to help ensure we can honor all those who fought for our enfranchisement, including those who continued to fight for universal suffrage for 45 years after the 19th Amendment was ratified," she said. "As suffragist Frances Harper once said, 'What we need today is not simply more voters, but better voters.'
"I am grateful to be able to support C70's efforts to not only engage, but also educate."
Kirn, a Maryland native, holds degrees from Haverford College and Columbia University School of Law. She lives in the city's Fairmount section and routinely engages in pro bono activities, alongside her robust nationwide practice and board service at Bartram's Gardens.
"We're thrilled to welcome Jillian Kirn to our board of directors," said Committee of 70 President & CEO David Thornburgh. "Her perspective and experience, coupled with a passion for better government in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania, make her a strong fit for our organization. We're confident she will have a positive impact on our work for years to come."
Prior to Kirn's appointment, Government Law & Policy Associate George J. Farrell served as a 2019-20 Buchholz Fellowship with Seventy, just one of six people selected. That program elevates and further trains emerging leaders under 40 whose work in the private or nonprofit sector and embody personal and professional integrity, work ethic, collaborative spirit, superior intellect, and a passion for improving the community.
"At this particular time in our history, it's more important than ever to invest in Philadelphia and its neighbors, and Greenberg Traurig is delighted that our talented lawyers continue to make meaningful contributions in this arena," Toll added.
