“One day I was walking with my dog in the very old local churchyard when a lady came up to me and said, ‘It’s cowled.’

I immediately thought she must have seen the ghost of a monk, as their hood was called a cowl. I couldn’t see it, but said, ‘How wonderful to see such an apparition. Do you see ghosts here often?’

I later discovered cowled was a local pronunciation of cold.”
