Ground Breaking News: New Early Pregnancy Paternity Testing from Natus

Until recently, prenatal D.N.A. test was available starting at 9 weeks. Thanks to advance technology developed by Natus Laboratory this test is now offered at an earlier stage of the pregnancy giving future parents more time to plan the rest of the pregnancy. This new prenatal paternity D.N.A. test is being provided only by Natus Laboratory.
Unlike classic prenatal D.N.A. test where amniocenteses fluid is used to determinate the paternity of the fetus, this new prenatal test uses fetal cell-free DNA (cfDNA) found in the mother’s bloodstream and extracted from the mother’s arm.
The method involved measuring the Genotypes present in the cfDNA found in maternal plasma at 317,000 genetic markers known as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The SNP measurements were analyzed using an advanced informatics technology, Parental Support TM, which was designed for single cell genotyping1 in the context of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and non-invasive prenatal aneuploidy diagnosis.2
To include an alleged father, the fetal DNA will inherit the SNP alleles from the alleged father. To exclude an alleged father, the fetal DNA will have at least one mismatch where the SNP alleles are not inherited from the alleged father.
The procedure is safe and non invasive for both mother and fetus. The alleged father’s D.N.A. is collected with a cheek swab.
Natus Laboratory also offers the option to use other sample such as hair, chewed gum or sperm as a source of D.N.A. for the alleged father, allowing the mother to conduct a prenatal paternity test without having to involve her partner. A full list of sample is available on Natus web site.
Results are available within 5 working days, however as second blood draw might be necessary at the 6th week if not enough fetal cell were found in the first blood draw.
If samples were collected with proper chain of custody the report provided by Natus is a legal document proving paternity of the fetus.
