SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Mar. 29, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Habitat Communication & Culture, an innovative organizational consulting and leadership development company, has exited a year-long stealth strategy and will begin accepting new clients in spring 2021. The company specializes in data-driven assessments, goal-setting systems and performance management solutions.
Founded in January 2020, the company quickly expanded, adding a minority partner and Director of Consulting Operations as well as a Project Coordinator.
The Founding & Stealth Operations
Spencer Harris and Jarad Johnson joined forces at Mostly Serious, a leading full-service digital marketing agency located in the Midwest. It was there that they discovered the power of the systems Habitat now offers its clients. "Over the past 4 years, we have witnessed the power of systems tailored to the specific needs of organizations, as we used those very systems to build Mostly Serious from a team of seven to a team of 15 while also doubling our client roster and more than tripling our revenue," said Harris.
Under the pair's leadership, Mostly Serious was named Small Business of the Year in 2019, by XYZ, and has been added to the list of Inc. 5,000 Fastest Growing Companies.
After seeing the immediate and broad demand of their service and approach, the team determined the need for rapid yet intentional expansion. Their first hire was Laura Greene-Johnson, a member of the founding team at Mostly Serious a decade earlier, as Project Coordinator. Next, they brought in Benjamin Thomas as partner, who holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and currently serves as a management faculty member in the departments of Organizations, Human Resource Management, and Motivation. As a regular contributor on research projects for each business, Thomas quickly recognized the potential of the venture.
"There are many consulting companies out there; what separates Habitat, and what initially attracted me to join the company, is their embrace of a data-first approach to meaningfully solve problems for their clients," said Thomas. "Then, when we discussed the demand for strong ethical standards in consulting engagements as well as their history of living up to those standards at Mostly Serious, I knew we could build something different."
Initial Growth & Success
After solidifying the team, Habitat focused on building out the systems and mechanisms the market was demanding, starting with a proprietary data-driven approach to initial company assessments, which allows every engagement to begin by identifying the problems that need to be solved and the specific outcome requirements of each engagement. Additionally, the team developed a robust goal-setting system and approach to performance management.
The Habitat team then installed these systems with select clients, focusing on ensuring every solution was successfully implemented throughout the organization. Rob Haik, Principle at hdesigngroup, reflected on their ongoing engagement: "Their ability to work with our entire organization to identify the problem, then propose targeted solutions that empower our teams to collaborate in building a better solution ensures our investment results in a faster and stronger company."
Other clients include Old Missouri Bank, Bryan Properties and Community Foundation of the Ozarks. The company has also entered into a partnership with the Small Business Development Center of Missouri to bring their services to select businesses across the state in 2021.
Future Vision
By the start of 2021, Habitat had surpassed its 2-year growth plans. "We utilize a slow-is-smooth, smooth-is-fast approach to building companies, and with Habitat we have been forced to intentionally hit the brakes on our growth numerous times," said Harris. "It's a good problem to have, and we are working diligently to expand our team to fit the demand; however, we will always put quality work and effective results above rapid growth."
Harris and Johnson shared that they see a long-term opportunity to bring innovative technological products to the consulting space, one of which is currently in an alpha release for internal testing. "One of our objectives is to provide the simplest solutions that achieve maximal outcomes. The technology platform we're building will save our clients time, increase system adoption and let us bring our expertise to more companies," Harris noted.
Johnson added, "Our North star objective will always remain clear—help organizations build better teams and help teams build better organizations. Creating the systems and products needed to solve organizational problems ourselves has always kept things moving steadily toward that ultimate objective, not to mention proven more efficient, so that's exactly what we intend to do for Habitat's clients."
