Haivision, a leader in video streaming solutions, today announced that its customer Riot Games was named a finalist in the IBC 2019 Innovation Awards, with strategic technology support from Haivision.
Riot Games leads the esports industry and its broadcast of the 2018 League of Legends World Championship, carried globally by more than 30 television channels and digital platforms to more than 99.6 million viewers, is being recognized by the IBC Awards as a finalist in the Content Creation category.
Using new remote production video streaming and video encoding technologies from Haivision, the tournament was broadcast from Korea while being centrally managed and produced from the Riot Games’ headquarters in Los Angeles in 18 studios dedicated to 18 different regions/languages, delivering a broadcast experience that rivals some of the biggest professional sporting events.
“Riot Games has a long track record of innovating the esports consumption experience for players, fans, and partners,” said Mitch Rosenthal, Head of Production and Operations at Riot Games. “The 2018 World Championship provided an opportunity to leverage new technology to improve the viewing experience for the largest audience in esports.”
“Our technology and expertise in streaming low latency video over all types of networks helped deliver the level of reliability and flexibility that Riot Games needed for their remote production,” said Peter Maag, Chief Marketing Officer, Haivision. “We worked closely together to build a REMI workflow that supports a successful broadcast while significantly reducing operational costs, which allows Riot Games to continually innovate and deliver great experiences to their rapidly growing fan base.”
Representing the very best of technical excellence in pursuit of real benefits for producers and viewers alike, the Innovation Awards judges were “astounded by the range of imaginative projects submitted and had some really tough decisions to make,” said Michael Lumley, Chair of the international judging panel. The award winners will be announced at the IBC2019 Awards Ceremony, held at 18:30 on Sunday, September 15.
