Autumn sales across the Virtuoso network are up 69% this year, with bookings up 59%, according to data the luxury network unveiled at its 38th annual Virtuoso Travel Week. The month-by-month figures run deeper into the year than most in the industry expected: September sales up 77%, October bookings up 59%, and November running above 70% on both measures — with Virtuoso's own pacing data suggesting September could outsell August this year. Europe's autumn bookings have climbed 49% even as rates rose more than 7%, lifting sales 64%. Demand growing through a price increase is the signature of a season being chosen rather than settled for.
For Haute Retreats, the luxury villa rental and concierge company with more than 2,400 fully staffed estates across 83-plus destinations, the data confirms a pattern its own concierge desks have watched build for several seasons.

A longer season, not a displaced one
The distinction matters for reading the data. Summer itself has not weakened; the autumn growth is additional, driven by travelers extending the year rather than trading one month for another. Virtuoso's reporting notes clients traveling later, lingering longer and investing more, with 30% taking fewer trips but making each one longer — a pattern that stretches naturally past the August boundary that once defined the season.
The same research identifies where the extended season is landing: Europe leads the shift, and the France–Italy pairing is the most common combination, with Italy appearing in two of every five multi-city itineraries.
Why Italy absorbs the autumn better than anywhere
That prominence is not accidental. Italy is the rare destination where the infrastructure of summer holds deep into the fall — and where the country itself improves as the crowds thin.
Across its Italian villas — a curated collection of more than 250 properties spanning Tuscany, Lake Como, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Umbria and Sardinia — Haute Retreats describes September and October plainly as harvest season: the wine harvest in Tuscany, a still-warm sea in the south, quieter roads and softer rates from late September. Sixty-nine percent of Virtuoso advisors report rising requests for multigenerational and family travel — the leading trip type of the season — with celebration travel close behind at 60%. Those are group sizes that only certain kinds of property can hold, and they travel on the one calendar the whole family shares: once the summer constraint loosens, the reunion moves to the weeks when the destination is quietest and the houses are easiest to run.
It is also a group that plans. Assembling three generations around one table is a project measured in months, which feeds directly into the booking behavior now visible in the data.
A season that now requires planning
The practical consequence of a 69% growth year is that autumn has inherited high season's booking behavior along with its demand. Virtuoso's data shows 42% of clients booking further in advance to secure preferred options, and future bookings one to two years out up 50% — patterns that once belonged exclusively to July and August.
Nor does the shift stop at November. Festive-season bookings across the network are up 65% and sales up 56%, while the sharpest rate growth of the autumn has been recorded along the French Riviera, ahead of the Greek Isles and Puglia — coastlines that until recently emptied by mid-September.
For travelers, the reading is straightforward: the season that used to reward spontaneity is now rewarding the planners, and the gap between the two is widening each cycle.
