NEW YORK, April 4, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Shudder, AMC Networks' premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural released its first original documentary feature, Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror on February 7, 2019. The film features in-depth interviews with noted directors, writers, and actors, including Ernest Dickerson (Bones), Rusty Cundieff (Tales from the Hood), Jordan Peele (Us), Tina Mabry (Mississippi Damned), Tony Todd (Candyman), Paula Jai Parker (Tales from the Hood), Tananarive Due (My Soul to Keep), and Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman. Shudder decided to go on a 5-school HBCU film screening tour courtesy of the HBCU Cinema Experience from February 11, 2019 (Black History Month) to March 29, 2019 (HBCU Awareness Month) to promote Horror Noire. The participating HBCUs included Hampton University, Clark Atlanta University, Florida A&M University, Norfolk State University, and Benedict College.
The HBCU Cinema Experience provided Shudder with a new method to reach African American millennials. The students at Clark Atlanta University were treated to a Q&A with actor Keith David who discussed the importance of consistency in film. "I will believe what you tell me to believe," said Mr. David. The students at Benedict College enjoyed a very informative Skype session with director Xavier Burgin. Horror Noire received rave reviews at all of the HBCUs. "I thought it was a great film and loved the way they brought in the history and sociology," said Norfolk State University Associate Professor and Chair Dr. Wanda Brockington. The HBCU Cinema Experience also created important dialogue about the need for diversity in the horror genre. "We like scary stories too and we have our own folklore," said Clark Atlanta University School of Arts and Sciences Dean, Dr. Danille K. Taylor.
Shudder provided a promo code to the 5 participating HBCUs that allowed subscribers to watch the premium streaming service for 30 days free of charge. Outspoken Media Group created a comprehensive social media strategy for the HBCU Cinema Experience that generated over 3 million impressions.
