CHARLESTON, S.C., March 14, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Head & Neck Cancer Alliance (HNCA) will hold its inaugural national Head and Neck Cancer (HNCA) Move-A-Thon in April 2023, which is also Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month. The HNCA Move-A-Thon is a virtual interactive event that invites the public to raise funds and awareness for head and neck cancers by setting a personal "move" goal to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and families!
The "moving" can be anything a participant loves to do. Participants don't need to be athletes to participate in the Move-a-Thon. It can be any activity they enjoy! It can be walking, swimming, riding a bike or a horse, knitting, singing, painting, driving, dancing, playing with kids, walking the dog, pickleball, tennis, golfing, cooking and more. To create a team, join a team or fundraise on your own, participants can register here.
A Zoom planning meeting for Move-a-Thon Team Captains and Participants will be held Wednesday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. ET. The meeting will offer ideas on how to fundraise, provide inspiration and friendship. In addition, a short and helpful video on the registration process is available.
As a wrap up to the Move-a-Thon celebration in April, HNCA is honored to announce that Jason White of Green Day and a tonsil cancer survivor will be performing virtually on April 29, 2023, from 1:00 -3:00 p.m. EST. The HNCA Move-A-Thon will celebrate survivors, give hope to those presently in treatment, and honor those lost. Proceeds from this event will advance prevention, detection, treatment, and rehabilitation of oral, head, and neck cancer. Voice Actor and throat cancer survivor, Rob Paulsen, will be moving to raise funds and awareness for HNCA.
The HNCA Move-a-Thon in April 2023 will happen concurrently with HNCA's 25th annual nationwide campaign – "Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Week" – to be held April 16 - 22, 2023.
Rob Paulsen, voice-over actor, and Jason White, Green Day guitarist – both head and neck cancer survivors – are also joining forces with the HNCA to promote the benefits of screenings and early detection during HNCA's "Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Week" April 16 - 22, 2023.
During "Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week," HNCA promotes a high volume of free oral, head and neck cancer screenings all over the world, plus educational talks, and other awareness programs. Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers affecting the oral cavity (mouth), larynx (voice box), pharynx (throat), sinuses, nasal cavity, or salivary glands. More than 65,000 Americans are diagnosed with head and neck cancer every year, with 14,600 lives lost. Of those who do survive, many suffer long-term problems, such as severe facial disfigurement or difficulties with eating and speaking. The death rate associated with oral and oropharyngeal cancers remains particularly high because the cancers routinely are discovered late in their development. The Head & Neck Cancer Alliance's mission is to advance prevention, detection, treatment and rehabilitation of oral, head and neck cancer through public awareness, research and advocacy.
The fastest rising types of head and neck cancers are cancers of the throat caused by the human papillomavirus or HPV, which account for over 13,000 cases per year in the U.S., an incidence that represents over a 200% increase over the past three decades. Currently, head and neck cancers account for approximately 4% of all diagnosed cancers in the country.
