Over the next 20 years, an average of 10,000 people in the U.S. will reach age 65 every day — a staggering number when you consider that experienced healthcare professionals are also aging out of the profession at an alarming rate.

Today, HealthcareSource®, the leading provider of talent management solutions for the healthcare industry, issued a statement in support of the Educating Medical Professionals and Optimizing Workforce Efficiency and Readiness (EMPOWER) Act, a bill that passed in the House in late July and is now under review in the Senate. The legislation, also known as H.R. 3728, supports interprofessional geriatric education, training, and research to develop a geriatric-capable workforce, improving health outcomes for our country’s rapidly growing and diverse aging population.
If passed, the legislation would reauthorize the Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program, under which health professions schools can receive grants to integrate geriatrics training and education with primary care training and education. It would also revive Geriatric Academic Career Awards to support the training of healthcare professionals who can provide geriatric clinical education.
“Over the next 20 years, an average of 10,000 people in the U.S. will reach age 65 every day — a staggering number when you consider that experienced healthcare professionals are also aging out of the profession at an alarming rate,” said J.P. Fingado, Chief Executive Officer and President of HealthcareSource. “This has created a perfect storm for providers trying to meet the healthcare needs of this growing population.”
According to Senator Susan Collins, co-sponsor of the Geriatrics Workforce Improvement Program, “the country needs 20,000 geriatricians to meet the needs of older adults, yet fewer than 7,300 physicians are board-certified in the specialty.”
