IDAHO FALLS, Idaho, Feb. 25, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Heartland Pharmacy will now be offering Pharmacogenomics testing (PGX), a type of genetic testing to help patients better understand how certain drugs will react with their metabolism and unique genetic makeup. This innovative testing will lead patients to find the right treatment and help them avoid taking medications that could pose a risk to their health.
Pharmacogenomics at Heartland Pharmacy will end the need for trial and error testing of medications. With PGX, the patient will be able to identify the right drug, at the right dose, with a single test. After discussing the results of the test with a physician, an effective course of treatment can be identified.
"We are so happy to announce that we have just executed the agreement with Mediscreen to start the Pharmacogenomics (PGX) program for Heartland Pharmacy. We have secured a 12-month exclusivity for all of our pharmacies in the 12 states we serve," said Heartland Pharmacy CEO Reece Christensen. "This is truly a landmark opportunity for us and our patients."
This advancement in medicine can help save patients time, money, and possibly their life. According to the Mayo Clinic, each person metabolizes various drugs differently. While some may metabolize a given drug too quickly, causing the drug to not take full effect, some may metabolize that same drug too slowly. Metabolizing a drug too slowly will cause a build-up of that drug in the body, which can cause harmful, even life-threatening, levels of toxicity.
Pharmacogenomics benefits patients including:
- Patients who show lack of results or sensitivity to a given treatment.
- Those with multiple prescriptions and chronic conditions.
- Patients who have demonstrated poor compliance.
- Patients with a history of Pharmacotherapy failure.
"We are excited to share information about the process for testing and results with our patients and communities," said Christensen. "Our patients come to us for a solution, for relief. Personalized treatment options can be scarce. We want to ensure that doctors have the use of Pharmacogenomics, which will result in all around better healthcare decisions."
