BEDMINSTER, N.J., Sept. 24, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- When a child is diagnosed with cancer, it impacts his or her life as well as siblings, parents, and loved ones. The emotional and financial burden of the diagnosis takes a toll on the family.
Cancer Support Community Central NJ (CSCCNJ) is pleased to announce that it is embarking on a partnership with the Jason P. Schaible Memorial Fund (JPS). By joining forces, we can ensure that the families of pediatric cancer patients have access to additional emotional, social, and financial support.
Through this partnership, a newly created fund has been established that enables CSCCNJ to assist with non-medical related expenses to relieve some of the financial burdens that accompany these difficult life circumstances, while providing access to additional psychosocial support for the whole family, creating a positive impact during a stressful time. Every referred family will receive a psychosocial assessment provided by a licensed mental health professional and a unique individualized plan, including financial support.
The inspiration behind this partnership is the heroism and compassion exhibited by Jason Schaible before and during his cancer diagnosis and treatment, which has lived on long after his battle with the disease. Schaible's family and friends admire how, during his entire life, he so easily extended compassion to others. He inspired others to "Raise the Bar," a motto that guided his approach to life. His actions created a positive ripple effect throughout the community, and continue to provide comfort and support to those in need.
"Both organizations have similar goals and it is a perfect blend between my professional and personal missions to help support the surrounding pediatric cancer community. The financial support from the JPS Memorial Fund and emotional support from CSCCNJ provide these families with a comprehensive sense of belonging when they need it most," says Katherine Schaible, LSW, Manager, Outreach and Family Programs at CSCCNJ. She continues, "The emotional and financial impacts of a cancer diagnosis expand beyond treatment. It is crucial to provide families with financial assistance because it alleviates the one of the stressors associated with cancer in their lives."
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, in the U.S. 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; approximately 1/4 of them will not survive the disease. "Our mission is to provide emotional and social support to the parents and age and developmentally appropriate activities for the children; a safe space where kids can be kids in the face of cancer," says Jesse Guzik, MS, CCLS, Child/Youth Program Coordinator at CSCCNJ.
In 2019, CSCCNJ unveiled its Vision for the Future, a five-part strategic plan that includes an Unmet Needs fund as one of its five pillars for expanding support to those impacted by a cancer diagnosis. The other pillars, which were developed to improve CSCCNJ's ability to meet the needs of persons with cancer, survivors, families, and caregivers, are Nutrition; Support4Families; Outreach to Underserved Communities; and Patient Centered Care.
