Hemp Eyewear launches on Kickstarter today bringing one of the most unique eyewear frames to the market. The team at Hemp Eyewear has developed an innovative, sustainable technology that processes plant fibre into solid material. Each pair of sunglasses is handcrafted by artisans in Edinburgh, Scotland using sustainable technology, organic materials and traditional artisanal techniques. Hemp is the ideal alternative to harmful plastics as it’s one of the most beautiful and sustainable materials on earth. Using hemp into the core material allows for a unique pair of sunglasses that are both one-of-a-kind and good for the planet.
“During my final year of university, I searched for the most sustainable material on earth and stumbled upon hemp, which was the most beneficial material in every category,” says Sam Whitten, Founder of Hemp Eyewear. “After analysing the growing sustainable eyewear market, I found hundreds of brands making bamboo and wood frames, but none used hemp. That is where the idea to create Hemp Eyewear came from and I am so excited to offer people such a unique and sustainable product.”
Hemp Eyewear is offered in three styles: WALDEN, MUIR and EDEN. Each style is individually handcrafted by skilled artisans with ultimate attention to detail. The plant fibres from the hemp naturally form one-of-a-kind patterns in the frames making each pair special and irreplaceable. Everything about this eyewear is unconventional: the materials, the process, the design and the look.
The Walden style is named after the book by Henry David Thoreau, which reflects upon simple, environmentally healthy living in a woodland cabin. Deep blue coloring from eco dye is combined with Hemp Eyewear’s sustainable hemp technology to create this bold frame with a strong outdoorsy feel.
The Muir style is named after John Muir, one of the first American environmentalists. Known as “Muir of the Mountains” and the “Father of the national parks,” he was an ecological hero. So, we named our most classic frame after him. Using naturally extracted organic dye, these frames are a darker color to offer customers a more classic option. These earthy frames are made from plants that are literally sown from the soil.
The Eden style is named after the Biblical story that states Humanity originated from this ecological paradise. Additionally, there is a particularly beautiful river named ‘Eden’ in Scotland making it extra special since water is the key ingredient. These frames represent the unique hemp material in all of its unfiltered glory. The plant fibres are left in their natural state with absolutely no coloring whatsoever. The fibres create a beautiful, organic beige tone on their own, and the individual strands of the plant can be seen in the material.
Each pair of sunglasses has 100% UV400 protection lenses so there is never a reason to worry about eye damage from the sun. With Hemp Eyewear’s high grade nickel spring hinges, each pair of frames will fit anyone’s head, no matter the size or shape.
With Hempcare, the team promises to repair customers’ sunglasses for life. If a customer wants to change their old frames, instead of throwing them out, they can send them back to be recycled correctly. They’ll also receive 50% off their next pair and a replacement pair will be offered for frames that cannot be repaired.
Hemp Eyewear is now available on Kickstarter in all three styles for the special price of $81 for a limited time only. For more information or to place a pre-order, visit pr.go2.fund/hempeyewear.
