Heritage Community to Host Posttraumatic Growth Symposium
PROVO, Utah, July 5, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The Heritage Community, Utah's premier residential treatment center for adolescents age 12 to 18, will host the 2018 Posttraumatic Growth Symposium on July 13, 2018, at its Provo campus. Kayla Harrison, Olympic gold medalist and sexual abuse survivor, will deliver the keynote address at this year's event.
"The posttraumatic growth symposium is designed to provide a forum where individuals, families and professionals come together to discuss proven strategies to maximize and promote posttraumatic growth," said Ian Petersen, Business Development Director at The Heritage Community. "We have a powerful lineup of nationally recognized experts in the field and an inspiring keynote speaker, Kayla Harrison, who will encourage attendees by sharing her story."
The second annual Posttraumatic Growth Symposium, co-sponsored by McLean Hospital of Massachusetts, seeks to further the understanding of how childhood trauma affects adolescents and young adults, and to develop research-based strategies for identifying, assessing and treating trauma. In addition to Ms. Harrison's keynote address, this single-day event features breakout sessions hosted by nationally recognized experts in posttraumatic growth as well as a panel discussion, lunch and networking opportunities.
Recognizing the symptoms of trauma is essential for getting adolescents and young adults the treatment they need to achieve happiness and success. Petersen said, "Those suffering from depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and grief are all around us, whether we see it or not. Some of those who suffer seek professional help and go on to develop resilience and coping skills, allowing them to lead healthier and happier lives. They work with clinicians who understand the difference between symptoms and causation, and that causation is often some sort of trauma."
Those who are interested in collaborating with and learning from posttraumatic growth experts from around the country are encouraged to register for this year's symposium. Five continuing education units (CEU) credits are available.
