The patient, known as Mr. River, tells a dubious tale of two teenage boys on the run from an assassin.
An action-adventure filled with mystery, the story is ultimately about a high school runaway who saves the life of a stranger. The novel highlights how anyone can become a hero, and explores the importance of never making irresponsible assumptions about others.
Adding to this sentiment, Bradley touches upon the problem of cyberbullying. Malachi, the protagonist in Mr. River’s story, has been the target of bullies most of his school life. Misery compounds when Malachi’s classmates dedicate a website to insulting him and his family. Little do they know, the heart of a hero beats within Malachi.
“Cyberbullying is not your father’s version of bullying. Its damage can spread like a wild fire and it is hard to put out,” Bradley says. “People, including myself, are quick to judge and categorize others. I want people to appreciate that no one is as they seem. I want people to understand that labels are often misleading. I want readers to believe that under the right conditions: anyone can be a hero or a villain.”
