Yocum thought about "Passover" for the past 15 years. In his research for his book, he became familiar with the late Eva Moses Kor, who survived experiments that Dr. Mengele did on twins during the Holocaust. Yocum was inspired to take a tour of Auschwitz – which she was leading.

The title for "Passover" was inspired by the Biblical story of the Israelites being led out of Egypt. The connection stems from the Angel of Death passing over, just as Dr. Mengele selected who was to live and who was to die. As the story unfolds, Bauer has developed a synthetic pathogen that selects who lives and who dies as well.

Jeff Yocum is retired from The John Hopkins Hospital. He has a background in engineering and has worked on projects including the Space Shuttle boosters in the aftermath of the Challenger disaster. This impacted his understanding of the Holocaust because he learned about institutional commitment, infrastructure and logistics combined to affect the execution of a large-scale project.
