ARLINGTON, Va., Dec. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Research indicates that the current approach to college and career readiness is too narrow. These findings drove Hobsons, the education technology leader and provider of Naviance, to develop an entirely new framework for college, career and life readiness and issue the report Expanding the Definition of College and Career Readiness to advance changes in the field.
Traditionally, the focus of college and career readiness (CCR) includes three areas: academic skills, career knowledge, and college knowledge. The current approach omits the life skills that students need to be successful after they are admitted to college or begin a career. Hobsons' report expands the definition of CCR to include six competencies that students must achieve to not only enroll in college and find careers, but also succeed once they are there: academic skills, career knowledge, college knowledge, interpersonal skills, self knowledge, and transition skills.
"Our work with 10 million students and educators from 13,000 schools across the country shows the need for a more comprehensive approach to helping students navigate life beyond high school," said Dr. Kim Oppelt, Director, Research at Hobsons.
Several districts are already making significant strides by expanding college and career readiness. Everett Public Schools, located just north of Seattle, Washington, has adopted a whole student approach, a change that delivered a district-wide increase for on-time high school graduation to 95 percent, an increase of 64 percent.
"We had many students coming to our district with a story of what was going on in their lives that was preventing them from graduating and achieving their high school and postsecondary goals. When a foundation for social and emotional skills is established early on, students transform into effective adults," said Becky Ballbach, Director of Student Support Services at Everett Public Schools.

The Framework is built on a review of relevant research, state individualized learning plans, approved ESSA plans, and various school and district scope and sequences. Professional standards from leading counseling and social emotional learning associations also informed the Framework.
