DELRAY BEACH, Fla., Sept. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Being away from home may mean you're headed to a favorite vacation spot, going to visit family, or even something more serious like a hurricane is predicted in your area. No matter the reason you are leaving your home for a bit, it is important to take the worry of potential water damage off your mind. You can do this by following a few basic precautions yourself, as well as asking a friend or neighbor to check on your home periodically.
Check for Leaks Before Leaving
Water damage is inevitable if you already have a leak somewhere in your home. Be sure to check under the sinks, around the washer and the dishwasher, the toilets, and anywhere in your home where a leak might occur. If you do find a leak, be sure to have it fixed or the water supply temporarily turned off before you leave.
Shut Off the Main Water Valve
It is easy to prevent water damage in your home if there is no water going into it. You can find your main water valve in the basement, if you have one, or on the outside of your house. The location can vary.
Check or Disconnect Supply Lines to Appliances
Run your hand along the supply lines to your appliances. If there is any moisture, you will want investigate the problem or replace them before you leave. In a rush? Disconnect and drain your appliances until you get back and can arrange for repairs.
Clean the Gutters
Full gutters and clogged downpipes can cause a disaster if water overflows from them. By cleaning all gutters and downpipes on your home, the water can flow freely and away from your roof. Excess water will drain to the designated spot and not disturb your home. While this should be done on a regular basis, taking a peek before you leave town can help prevent water damage to your home in case of a big rainfall.
Check Exterior Faucets
Exterior faucets, if leaking, can pool water underneath them. This water can then seep under or through your foundation if it is left unmonitored. You can replace the faucets before leaving and install leak-resistant ones, or you can shut of the water at the main valve to stop this leak until you return home to repair it.
