Homestead High School Student Sean Chen Awarded Yamaha/Dennis DeLucia Scholarship
CUPERTINO, Calif. (PRWEB) April 18, 2019 -- Yamaha Corporation of America and Winter Guard International (WGI) recently named Sean Chen winner of the 2019 Yamaha/Dennis DeLucia Scholarship.
Chen was awarded the annual scholarship during the finals of the WGI World Championship, a competitive indoor marching event held this past week in Dayton, Ohio. The scholarship is named for Dennis DeLucia, a renowned percussion teacher, arranger, clinician, judge and Yamaha Artist.
Chen is currently a senior at Homestead High School in Cupertino, California. This summer, following graduation, Chen will be marching with the Blue Devils A Corps in the Front Ensemble. He will then begin his music education and chemistry studies at the University of California, Los Angeles in the fall.
Chen began playing piano at four years old and started marching during his freshman year when he joined the Homestead High School’s Marching Band Front Ensemble as a synthesizer player. The high school senior has been affiliated with the band, as well as Homestead Winter Percussion, ever since.
Throughout his percussion career thus far, Chen has had the opportunity to perform several solos and has been given several recognitions for his hard work. During his sophomore year, he performed a piano solo at the WGI Championship weekend and was subsequently named “MVP” that season. The following year, Chen performed a violin solo at WGI where he was honored as “Outstanding Performer.” During his senior year, Chen performed a violin solo, as well as a visual solo in his school’s marching band and competed at the Bands of America Grand Nationals in Indianapolis. There, he was awarded the Bands of America Grand Nationals Yamaha Scholarship.
