Funds raised by the endurance challenge will support Hopecam's mission to reduce isolation by keeping children with cancer connected during treatment.
RESTON, Va., Oct. 12, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- What if running 183 miles around the world could help children with cancer feel less alone?
This November 15–21, Hopecam founder Len Forkas will take on the Great World Race, running seven marathons on seven continents in seven consecutive days as part of 183 Miles of Hope, Hopecam's campaign to raise $183,000 for children battling cancer.
For Forkas, every mile has a purpose.
The goal of 183 Miles of Hope is to raise $183,000, with approximately $1,000 helping Hopecam connect another child with cancer to their classroom and community.
Each marathon will honor a Hopecam child whose life has been impacted by cancer. Throughout the journey, Len will share the stories of these children and highlight the importance of keeping young cancer patients connected to the people and communities they love.
"When a child is diagnosed with cancer, everything changes," said Forkas. "They may spend months away from school, away from their friends and away from the everyday experiences that are so important to a child. I want every mile I run to remind people that while these children are fighting cancer, they should not have to feel disconnected or forgotten."
Every year, approximately 16,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer. The average child with cancer misses between 136-180 days of school, practically an entire school year. Among the first side effects felt by these children is loneliness. During the most frightening time in their lives, they cannot be with their friends and classmates - two of their most important sources of support.
Since its founding in 2003, Hopecam has worked to bridge that distance. The organization provides technology and resources that allow children undergoing cancer treatment to remain connected to their classrooms, friends and communities. Hopecam has now connected more than 6,500 children with cancer to their classmates and peers.
"Len has spent more than two decades turning personal challenges into opportunities to help children," said Jeannie Buhr, Hopecam Board Chair. "This journey perfectly represents what Hopecam is all about. The goal isn't simply to run 183 miles. It's to make sure children facing cancer know that they are still part of their school, their friendships and their communities."
The journey will build on Forkas' history of extraordinary endurance challenges in support of Hopecam. His previous adventures, including the summiting of Mount Everest in 2025, have all raised awareness and funds for children with cancer.
Hopecam will share updates, behind-the-scenes stories and highlights from Len's journey throughout the Great World Race at www.hopecam.org/183miles.
