CALABASAS, Calif., Sept. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- HundrED, a Finnish education nonprofit and MUSE School, a sustainability driven, private school located in Calabasas, Los Angeles are recognizing innovators in K12 education from around the globe for outstanding achievements in sustainable development. The 3-day Sustainability Summit will take place at the MUSE School campus from November 1 - 3rd.
The Summit will include talks from the selected innovators themselves and keynote speeches from Suzy Amis Cameron, author and Co-founder of MUSE School and Saku Tuominen, Founder of HundrED about the need to focus on sustainability in education. Other guest presenters include, Senator Henry Stern, environmental activist and health advocate, Kelly Chapman Meyer, Co-Founder of the American Heart Association Teaching Gardens, and Paul Hudak, the MUSE School's Seed-To-Table Manager, who will give a keynote address followed by student-guided tours of 200 garden beds.
Since last March, HundrED and MUSE set out to discover ten innovations in K12 that have the potential to increase sustainability in schools across the globe. Dubbed HundrED's Spotlight on Sustainability, the research-based initiative shares impactful, scalable innovations that address educational solutions to overcome the growing environmental challenges facing the planet. Innovators were evaluated by an advisory board and the ten chosen recipients were selected based on impact, scalability and for addressing sustainability in education in a fresh way.
The ten innovators selected as part of HundrED's Spotlight on Sustainability include:
- Engineering Brightness, Colorado, United States - 1.3 billion people suffer from reliable electricity. Through creating lanterns, students gain confidence in engineering, electronics and philanthropy.
- Global Children's Designathon, Amsterdam, Netherlands - Structured workshop for children to invent, build and present self-devised solutions around Sustainable Development Goals.
- Kids Can! Innovation Camp, Manila, Philippines - E+STEAM (Empathy+STEAM), design-thinking and passion-based learning aligned with Sustainable Development Goals.
- Eco Schools, Copenhagen, Denmark - Encouraging young people to engage in their environment by allowing them opportunities to actively protect it.
- Go! Global | ESD Expert Net, Berlin Germany - A growing virtual exchange program focused on sustainable actions in schools in Germany, India, Mexico, and South Africa.
- Green Hope Foundation, Toronto, Canada - Children's rights and environmental protection through education and partnerships around Sustainable Development Goals.
- Lebanon Organisation for Green Schools (LOGS), Beirut, Lebanon - Raising environmental awareness, building good habits and citizenship through education.
- World's Largest Lesson, London, United Kingdom - Introduces Sustainable Development Goals to children and young people everywhere and unites them in action.
- Green Educator Course, Bali, Indonesia - Promotes sustainability in a holistic, student-centered way.
- Yes to Taste, No to Waste, London, United Kingdom - Raises awareness of food waste, encouraging healthy and sustainable eating.

Spurred from her experience introducing kids to eat more climate-friendly food at MUSE School, Suzy is encouraging people everywhere to change their relationship with food by swapping at least one meal a day with something plant-based to help reduce the devastation that industrial animal agriculture has on the environment.
In addition to receiving recognition at the Sustainability Summit, the selected innovators will be featured in a compelling new video and included in the inaugural Sustainability in Education Report that will be promoted globally. The full report which will be released during the Summit, will reveal key findings and recommendations about the state of sustainability education trends, worldwide.
According to the report (not yet released), influencing change requires a multi-stakeholder approach. All innovations selected as part of the Spotlight on Sustainability, identified community engagement as a huge contributing factor towards success. These innovators realize the importance of not only educating children, but engaging with teachers, community members, parents, and local businesses to support changes in perception, understanding and ultimately behavior. This also echoes a key finding from the Every Child to Flourish report published by HundrED, earlier this year.
