Hundreds of Cyclists Pedal into the Warm Weather this Weekend at the 16th Annual Tour de Elizabeth
Cyclists from all over Union County are preparing for Elizabeth's 16th Annual Tour de Elizabeth on Sunday, May 19th. After this long winter, hundreds of people are excited to keep the tradition and start their summer with a warm refreshingly unique experience: an upbeat 15-mile bicycle tour of New Jersey's Newest Destination: the City of Elizabeth.
ELIZABETH, N.J., May 17, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Hundreds of bicycle riders- whether beginner or pro- are preparing for Elizabeth's much anticipated annual Tour de Elizabeth, which is scheduled for this Sunday, May 19th (rain or shine). This bicycle tour will run for 15 miles while cyclists enjoy a scenic tour through the diverse landscapes of the City of Elizabeth. The annual 15-mile cycling event will begin and end at Elizabeth's City Hall, which is located at 50 Winfield Scott Plaza.
The ride will promptly begin at 9:00 a.m. but registration opens as early as 7:30 a.m. For those who wish to sign up in advance, registration is still open online at http://www.groundworkelizabeth.org or at http://www.goelizabethnj.com/bike/. Walk up registrations are $25 each and all are welcome. The first 500 registrants will receive a 2019 signature collectors ballcap, created by ABG Accessories and a Tour t-shirt. Additionally, all riders will receive a free raffle ticket for the post-event drawings. No bike? No problem! For those needing a bicycle, participants can rent one onsite. The theme for this year's ride is "Destination Elizabeth", featuring Elizabeth as a year-round destination City which boasts of great hotel accommodations, shopping, history, cuisine, and diversity. Groundwork Elizabeth and the City help to organize the Tour, assisted by the Elizabeth Destination Marketing Organization, the Bicycle Committee, and the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders who are all working with the City to promote the annual bike tour tradition.
The bicycle tour will also include a mini village with a full array of tables for sponsors and services, including nonprofits and health-based organizations. Water, fruit, and live music will be available to all participants throughout the busy day.
Please note that helmets are required for this event. The tour is open to all ages and all riding skill levels. As long as the participant can keep a moderate pace of 10 miles per hour and is able to ride 15 miles- there is a "bail-out" at the halfway mark. Members of the Elizabeth Police Department will also be on hand to escort cyclists on a route with rolling intersection closings and assist where needed.
