Ideum Wins Prestigious SEGD Award for Second Consecutive Year
CORRALES, N.M. (PRWEB) June 13, 2018 -- At the 2018 Society for Graphic Design (SEGD) Conference in Minneapolis, MN, Ideum was honored with a Global Design Award in the Interactive Experience category. Ideum's entry, Exploring Pueblo Pottery, was an interactive experience created in collaboration with Acoma Pueblo artist Michelle Lowden. The project utilized cutting-edge 360 degree projection mapping technology to let users explore traditional Acoma pottery designs and learn about the detailed symbology and rich cultural heritage they embody.
At the exhibit, visitors use a touch screen monitor to select from a range of Acoma motifs, which are then projected on the entire neck and body circumference of a large, four-foot olla, or water pot. Information about each of the designs is also presented, explaining their cultural and historical significance. Michelle Lowden worked closely with Ideum designers to help make animated transitions between designs as they appear on the pot.
Michelle explains, "It was an honor to work on this experimental project with Ideum. While working with Ideum, they encouraged and trusted me with all design illustrations that I felt best represented Acoma Pueblo pottery. I hope this project helps open doors to connecting more indigenous art to contemporary mediums."
To build the most compelling and dynamic experience possible, Ideum used state-of-the-art projectors and projection mapping software from Christie Digital systems. Christie's Pandora's Box was used to seamlessly blend the images created by 4 projectors arrayed around the pot's complexly curved surface.
Out of 353 entries in 2018, only 37 projects, including Exploring Pueblo Pottery, were selected for an award. This marks the second consecutive year in which Ideum has won an SEGD award in the Interactive Experience category. In 2017, Ideum was honored with a Global Design Award for an interactive video wall exhibit that used motion tracking to make a fully-animated 3D prehistoric dinosaur scene come to life. Ideum developed that exhibit with the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.
"It was great to collaborate with Michelle on the Pueblo Pottery project and to bring her traditional designs into a new medium and present them in an entirely new way," noted Ideum Founder and Creative Director Jim Spadaccini. "I am enormously proud of our team for winning this award again. In both years, they tackled emerging technologies, overcame technical hurdles, and designed exciting new experiential exhibits."
Ideum is currently working with New Mexico cultural and historical organizations to find a permanent home for this experimental installation.

Michelle Lowden is the proud founder and owner of Milo Creations (http://www.milocreations.net), which specializes in hand-painted Pueblo jewelry. Michelle was born in the Pueblo of Acoma where she currently operates and resides. Michelle has been creating jewelry for nearly a decade.
