The Institute for Education Innovation (IEI), a national school superintendent think tank, is partnering with Howard University to enrich IEI:Lead's Aspiring Superintendent Institute Winter 2023 program.

IEI:Lead's Aspiring Superintendent Institute empowers district leaders to successfully step into the role of superintendent through mentorship, collaboration, and leadership development. Through IEI:Lead, participants develop the skills necessary to take on the challenges of superintendency by gaining a deeper understanding of their leadership style and strengths, practicing their skills with mock board interviews, and role-playing real-life scenarios and simulations. They will also discover actionable solutions they can tailor to their district’s needs to ensure equitable learning opportunities and improve student outcomes.

The Winter 2023 program will be enhanced through a partnership with Howard University, offering the cohort 55 continuing education hours as well as a certificate from Howard University by completing a practitioner-oriented capstone project. The capstone will challenge participants to use what they learn throughout the program combined with their professional experience to analyze a real-world issue, providing practical recommendations to the district leadership team.

“Through the partnership with Howard University, the IEI:Lead program will provide even more relevant, real-world knowledge to thoroughly prepare participants for the role of superintendent,” said Doug Roberts, Founder and CEO of IEI. “Also, students will receive 55 continuing education hours which, depending on their state and school district, may be able to be used for licensure and an increase in pay.”

Over the course of the program, new and aspiring superintendents gather virtually once a week for two-hour sessions led this year by Dr. Sarena Shivers, Deputy Executive Director of Professional Learning and Member Services, Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators, and Traci Davis, Superintendent Emeritus. Dr. Shivers and Davis will be joined by their fellow educators and thought leaders who will share their own unique perspectives, insights, and guidance. The program will be overseen by Howard University assistant professor Dr. Shawn Joseph.

"We are excited to be partnering with the IEI community of superintendents to help develop the next generation of innovative leaders committed to improving student achievement in our public schools,” said Dr. Joseph.

The Winter 2023 Cohort is open to all aspiring leaders, including non-IEI member districts. Classes begin January 10, culminating with a graduation celebration on February 28 in San Antonio, Texas, site of the IEI National 2023 Spring/Winter Summit. A limited number of spots are available; to learn more or to register, visit the IEI:Lead website.
