Author addresses special needs, degenerative diseases, and even loss of a loved one
AUSTIN, Texas, June 26, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Author Krista Johnson Rietz has written an illustrated children's book that she hopes will open a road to communication about difficult subjects.
In "Silly Pickles," two young girls develop friendships, weather the storm of decline, live out loss, grieve together, and yet emerge with strength. When Ruth and Nell meet Adam, another 7-year-old, at the park, he is being pushed by his parents in a "big stroller." Adam has mitochondrial disease, but this doesn't stop the three children from being "silly pickles" together. Though, as their friendship advances, Adams health diminishes.
"My hope is that this book will help families to open conversations about positive ways to cope with difficult topics surrounding death and grief," said Rietz.
Rietz has worked with children professionally and through volunteer opportunities for over 30 years. She has encountered children with unexpected medical and educational changes, some seemingly insurmountable. Each situation has taught her about pairing the challenging issues with the grace-filled strengths.
"Even at the times of utter heartbreak," said Rietz, "there seems to be a tiny ray of light that shines through the darkness."
