The captain of the ship is being fed false charges concerning the crew by able seaman Jonas Penderghast, leading to numerous deaths. When certain crewmen go missing from the decks, the crew and perhaps even the captain himself begin to feel that Penderghast may be something more dreadful than a common snitch. As the crew plans to right the injustice, they have no idea what will come of their actions.
