SUN VALLEY, Calif. What opened in 1948 as a modest metal distributor serving a small portion of the Los Angeles area, has grown to a six location, 400-employee, metal distributor with a primary focus on meeting the metal needs of everyone from fabricators, manufacturers, contractors and welders to passionate DIYers, artists and off-road enthusiasts.
Founded by Norman and Sally Sherman, IMS started small but soon enjoyed quick growth as they sold many types of metal to businesses throughout the San Fernando Valley. For those that didn’t wander in to the warehouse, Norman would make deliveries out of the family station wagon – many of these requests going to the Hollywood studios for scenery and staging purposes. In the mid-1980s Norman’s son, Neil Sherman, took over the family business and has held the CEO title and an active role ever since. In the last thirty years IMS has added five branches and grown to be one of the Southwest’s largest metal distributors with branches added in Irvine, Riverside, San Diego, Phoenix and Tucson, with more locations arriving soon.

In recent years the company added a robust Metal Services division that added hi-definition plasma, tube and flatbed laser cutting as well as waterjet services.
