A new report released by InfoMart, based on a decade of proprietary data, found that 17% of the criminal convictions found for candidates in the healthcare industry are fraud-related. InfoMart, a recognized leader in global background screening and identity verification, has studied a decade’s worth of data tracking thousands of employers and millions of applicants to produce this study of healthcare statistics, which uncovers trends in crime and background screening related to the healthcare industry.

InfoMart's Healthcare Crime Categorization Report presents statistics broken down by year to reveal the:

  • average criminal hit rates in the industry.
  • average number of convictions per applicant.
  • percentage of candidates with records in each crime categorization (drug, fraud, non-violent, theft, sex, traffic, victimless, and violence).
  • crime classification trends, including the percentage of candidates with felony and misdemeanor convictions.
  • comparison of criminal hit rates compared to a variety of other industries.
  • most and least popular background screening services.

When compared to 25 other industries, healthcare consistently ranks highest in fraud-related criminal convictions. These convictions are on the rise for healthcare industry applicants; at the start of the decade, fraud categorizations ranged from 12 to 14%. In recent years, we’ve seen that number grow, ranging from 17 to 21%. InfoMart has found that fraud-related convictions are much more likely in the healthcare industry than in other fields. While property management comes in at a somewhat-close 13%, other industries have fraud-related crimes 9% of the time or less, with a considerable number of industries in the 3-5% range.

“The healthcare industry faces strict government regulations and issues like patient abuse, malpractice, and confidentiality,” explains Tim Gordon, InfoMart’s senior vice president. “For that reason, healthcare institutions in particular must place a high priority on developing and maintaining the best background check policies.
