Infotel Sponsors DAMA Houston Quarterly Meeting with Presentation in Partnership with Global Db2 Expert Craig S. Mullins of Mullins Consulting, Inc.
Infotel Corp. USA and Mullins Consulting hosted DAMA Houston's first quarterly meeting with a presentation geared towards IBM data management professionals along with an application quality assurance use case presented by Infotel.
TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 22, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Infotel, the leading company of data performance and optimization solutions for z/OS, recently sponsored DAMA Houston's February 12 quarterly meeting in partnership with Db2 expert Craig S. Mullins, who gave his presentation titled "Improving Database Application Quality for Optimizing Performance and Controlling Cost." Mullins and Infotel shared the presentation duties aimed to address data governance and code quality assurance for the mainframe and how it helps improve Db2 for z/OS. Additionally, Infotel presented a use case featuring its code quality assurance product DB/IQ. DB/IQ is a software solution designed to assess and improve the level of quality and maintainability of Db2 for z/OS applications before they get deployed live in a production environment.
Craig S. Mullins is recognized as one of the foremost Db2 experts in the country. He is president and principal consultant of Mullins Consulting, Inc. and has more than three decades of experience in database systems development. In his presentation, Mullins discussed some of the biggest issues facing DevOps professionals, DBAs, and developers, and how Fortune 1000 organizations are approaching solutions to ensure mainframe application delivery at the lowest cost possible.
"Today, news headlines talk about how automation will take the jobs of countless American workers in the coming years, but we want to talk about how it can save companies who don't have enough skilled resources to manage the workload of mainframe app development," said Carlos Almeida, Infotel Corporation's North American business analyst who has 20-plus years of experience in mainframe technologies. "Mainframe developers help assure the reliability of the world's most important information systems for banks, airlines, governments, and retailers. Technology like DB/IQ can help bridge the skills gap we're already experiencing."
Mullins and Infotel discussed how DevOps resources can break down silos between the business and development sides of large enterprises, and how the DevOps process is creating greater efficiency within app development for Db2. Today's IT workforce is experiencing a serious skills gap as an aging expert workforce retires with a shortage of experienced talent to take their place. Within mainframe environments, the gap is wider than their Windows and open source counterparts. This presentation aimed to address one way to adapt to this new reality with new automation tools to help mainframe developers with their application workloads.
"Organizations are working to be more responsive and move faster than ever before," said Db2 expert Craig S. Mullins. "DevOps practices and procedures can help them to rapidly and securely deliver applications that serve their customers with features that are up-to-date. But DevOps is not magic. It requires planning, orchestration and automation to succeed, and Infotel offers key pieces to the automation puzzle, especially for the Db2 aspect of application delivery."
The presentation also covered:
- How to improve app performance & availability
- How Db2 app performance affects End User Experience (EUX)
- How to avoid runaway MIPS consumption
- The positive impact of code standardization across a large enterprise
- How a poorly developed app can destroy an IT budget, and how to avoid the pitfall
Infotel finished the presentation with a quick use case from a large international insurance organization using DB/IQ for SQL code quality assurance across IBM z/OS. DB/IQ is a tool for DBAs, developers, and DevOps to assure code is up to in-house compliance standards as it is being written. Effective use of the system will typically uncover many potential problems and quickly help raise the quality of new and existing code as programmers are automatically alerted of any deviation from their organization's coding standards
